Anyone know about this ammo
4 Attachment(s)
Went to square away the 4473 form business at the gun shop. Guy was a jerk, even after I travelled 45 mins one way and 45 mins the other. Any any rate, The forms were even more screwed up as the guy put down the wrongs dates and etc. To make a long story short, after seeing how royally they screwed up I got a case of shot gun ammo out of the deal for free. However, it's not 00 buck for self defense. It's
Federal Top Gun 2 3/4 8 shot 3 dram 1/1/8 oz shot. Looks like it's mostly for clay and skeet. Hell I don't shot clay. CAn I use this stuff for target practice or for hunting birds. Seems like I got screwed again. I was so made I just wanted to get out of there and didn't think about the shells until I got home. Is this stuff as worth less as it looks? |
Re: Anyone know about this ammo
That shot will take down birds, snakes and rodents with ease. It's fine stuff for target practice, especially if you have a woman or child you are introducing to shotgunning.

Field Shot...very low recoil

Re: Anyone know about this ammo
Don't discount birdshot. That #8 shot will blow an arm or a leg clean off at 30 feet. One round to the chest will stop any attack. For personal defense, if you shoot someone father away that 10 feet or so you might end up in jail yourself. 0, 00, 000 and slugs are for hunting big game at distances of 50 yards and more.

Re: Anyone know about this ammo
SS,
Just an FYI. I'll be paying $50 for a case of that particular #8 shot shell at my local Walmart either this evening or tomorrow. Going for right around $4.75 per box. PLUS TAX. So your guy basically gave you approximately a $50 freebie for his shop screwing around. Now understand, it didn't cost HIM that $50, because he bought it at wholesale. But still, $50 IS $50. And the COST of ammo is ONLY GOING UP. So hang onto it. IT WILL come in handy. Trust me. And as has been said, it makes a GREAT low recoil self defense round. Especially inside your home or apartment especially with distances UNDER 25 feet. |

For comparison, I get Estate brand of similar quality for $52 from the trap range.

Re: Anyone know about this ammo
I remember as a child my father brokered gun sales and was always fiddling with some new gun at home; primarily shotguns.
One day I was out in the yard playing with a glove and ball while my father was loading one of theses new guns. This particular gun had a stuck firing pin. This meant when a shell was chambered it immediately fired with no pull of the trigger. Of course, this happens with the shotgun at his hip and pointed about 2 feet left of my head which was all of 15 feet away from the shotgun. I was standing next to a children's swimming pool which took the brunt of the blast by shattering into pieces and sending water pluming into the air. I was maybe 8yo at the time and once I got over the aural shock of the gunfire I was impressed at the damage to the pool and that I had gotten to experience being shot at without being hit. My father, OTOH, didn't get anything but a virtual heart-attack out of it. It certainly cemented gun rules #1 and #2 for me at an early age. #1 - Treat all guns as loaded. #2 - Don't point the gun at anything you don't intend to kill or don't mind destroying. edit: this post was relevant only because the shot in the gun accidentally fired was #8 birdshot which destroyed the swimming pool and convinced me real quick that #8 birdshot would inflict grievous wounds to a human being. |
Re: Anyone know about this ammo
That ammo is a bird hunting load, I've shot them by the 1000's. You can bust birds at up to 40 yards with them. Number 8 shot would be very deadly at 10 yards.

Re: Anyone know about this ammo
I should have added this. I contacted several large sporting goods stores and a couple of my buddies who own gun shops.
The price ran from somewhere around $12 per box (a buddy of mine's shop) to as high as $19 per box (Sports Authority). So to get this for approximately $5 a box is a steal. I'm seriously considering purchasing another case (10 boxes) for that same $50.48, which is what I paid today. Paid cash. Whistled all the way out to the truck. |
Re: Anyone know about this ammo
I've done my share of upland bird hunting and have never used anything smaller than 6 shot (dove hunting). Pheasants and waterfowl, I always use 4. Wouldn't 8 shot be used for trap or skeet?

Re: Anyone know about this ammo
Man when it comes to shotgun ammo swoop on a good deal!We bust a lot of skeet with #8 low brass and hunt the oak scrub with the same for grouse.
Busting grouse in the scrub is a close thing, and I would hate to catch one of those blasts myownself! The reason a shotgun is the best defence weapon is you will devistate anybody in the same room as you with low brass birdshot if you have to, but it won't for the most part go through drywall, insulation and wood to hit the people you are protecting. |

My friends from Colorado who bird hunt in Kansas and Nebraska come to Northern Michigan to hunt birds and they have to try to adapt to scrub, thier dogs have to too. It is such a challenge to them they won't quit. They used to laugh at our short barrels, but these guys and thier wives are great sports. |
